EMIGRANT WILDERNESS

Emigrant Wilderness is 140 air miles east of San Francisco and 50 miles south of Lake Tahoe. The 113,000 acres wilderness is, bordered by Yosemite National Park on the south and State Highway 108 on the north. The Emigrant Wilderness is a glaciated landscape of volcanic peaks, granitic ridges, numerous lakes, forest, and beautiful meadows.
This is a quiet place in comparison with Yosemite and Lake Tahoe where a lot of people visit.
There is neither a magnificent valley nor a big waterfall like Yosemite. Those lakes are small and are not compared with Lake Tahoe. But, this is the best place for everyone can enjoy backpacking trip.
Principal points of elevations are Crabtree Trailhead is 7,200 feet, Mosquito Pass is 9,300 feet and Emigrant Lake is 8,800 feet. There are no high mountain pass and steep switchbacks. Major lakes of this wilderness are in narrow area. Therefore, you can move to lake to lake within a few hours.
When you go overnight hike, you should get permit, but here is no quota and you do not have to make a reservation for many weeks in advance. The regulations of this wilderness are easier than Yosemite. You do not have to carry a food canister, as there is not bears habitat. All lakes are good for camping. You can enjoy fishing, swimming, and campfire by the lakes.
